It’s winter on Cape Cod, which brings snowfall and often power outages. For students at 4Cs, it’s better to be prepared, making longer outages safer and more manageable.

While many items can be great to have during a blackout, these five essentials are among the most important.

Flashlight

Any light source is helpful, but battery-powered flashlights are the most reliable option during a power outage. Keeping extra batteries available can prevent students from being stuck in a dangerously dark room.

Water bottles

When the power goes out, water lines tend to go as well. Keeping oneself hydrated is essential for health and concentration, making stored drinking water a must. Jugs are also an option, but bottles remain ideal in a power outage, as they prevent needing to clean dishes.

Writing equipment

While a student may not have power at home, that doesn’t mean the school won’t. Having physical notes keeps the possibility of studying at home an option. A notebook and pen or pencil can save the day, as electronic devices might not be available.

Power bank

A portable power bank can be vital when without power. Keeping phones and other devices charged allows for students to keep in touch with professors and continue to receive updates, including cancellations.

First-aid kit

Having a prepared first-aid kit ensures basic necessities, such as bandages and OTC medications, are available. Keeping one in the car, a backpack or at home allows students to waste less time looking for supplies.
