Dear MainSheet readers,

The start of the spring semester is upon us. For me, this marks my final semester at Cape Cod Community College. It also marks my first semester as co-editor-in-chief alongside Jessica Lynch, who has been a joy to work with throughout my time writing and editing for the MainSheet. You can read her letter here: https://mainsheetcapecod.com/letter-from-the-editor-6/. We will also be joined by Journalism II students Richard Clark, Bruce Bowen, Callee Burke, Kersten Marchese, and Wil Moser. I’m so excited to see what they and the new crop of Journalism I students come up with this semester. Richard Clark and Callee Burke have already come up with some exciting new additions to the MainSheet: MainSheet Conversations and a pet column, respectively. Check them out here: https://mainsheetcapecod.com/weekly-cutest-pet-poll/ https://mainsheetcapecod.com/mainsheet-conversations-episode-one/

My aim as co-editor-in-chief is to ensure that the MainSheet reflects diverse perspectives and topics, something I have no doubt our current team can accomplish. I want the MainSheet to not only cover events relevant to 4Cs, but events relevant to the broader culture that affects us all.

It’s not lost on me that the broader culture is in a dark place right now, and I think that it is my responsibility to acknowledge that. As co-editor-in-chief I want to both reflect upon and help mitigate what I have identified as an empathy void in society. I also want to continue to improve upon my skills as a writer, and not allow despair to silence my voice. In a 2015 article for the Nation entitled ‘No Place for Self-Pity, No Room for Fear,’ Toni Morrison wrote: “I know the world is bruised and bleeding, and though it is important not to ignore its pain, it is also critical to refuse to succumb to its malevolence. Like failure, chaos contains information that can lead to knowledge–even wisdom. Like art.” As a writer, I think it is my duty to keep writing not only in spite of the chaos but because of it. Thank you all for reading, and I can’t wait for all of you to see what the MainSheet has in store for this semester.

Sincerely,

Isabella Cantillano-Sanchez

Co-Editor-in-Chief
