Musicians, artists, filmmakers, and more will be assembling on campus this October for a special three-day arts event. Waves of Change Arts Festival, presented by the Social and Economic Justice Institute (SEJI) and the college, will be held as a way to bring 4Cs and the community together to celebrate art that has a social impact.

Waves of Change Arts Festival is set for Oct. 8-10. Receptions, with free refreshments, will be held each day, providing students the opportunity to meet artists, filmmakers, and other participants in person. Professors Ava Fedorov and Tim Miller, festival co-directors, discussed what attendees can expect.

Q: What can people expect to see and experience at the arts festival?

Fedorov: People can expect to see and experience multimedia and interactive art events and happenings ranging from interactive art installations to soundscape experiences; recycled material art workshops to poetry readings; and film screenings to live music extravaganzas! All types of artistic expression in response to the theme of social justice and visions for a hopeful future.

Q: What is the film festival called? How did you decide on that name?

Miller: It’s called the Fighting the Good Fight Film Fest. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that life is all about fighting the good fight, whether it’s taking care of your family, your friends, your community, anyone in need. Personally, I’ve often fallen short in this area by being too self-consumed. I believe if students and others are inspired to devote themselves to fighting the good fight, in their own way, they will lead happier, more rewarding lives.

Q: What did you look for when searching for films to include in the festival?

Miller: I’ve looked for quality films that show, despite how flawed humanity can be, there is good in the world. The films, I hope, will show that there are many ways of fighting the good fight, though, in the end, the common denominators are kindness, generosity and love.

Q: As a co-director of the arts festival, what were important things that you wanted to include as part of the experience and why?

Fedorov: It was really important to me that we demonstrated a broad range of artistic disciplines and points of view. I am particularly excited about the interactive art installations (I will be part of creating one) and the fact that the art will be happening all across campus and not just confined to the gallery or to the Tilden Arts Center. So keep your eyes (all your senses actually) out for Waves of Change artworks and artists roving all around campus!

It was also really important to me that we involved the broader community outside of just the bubble of our campus. To really put community in our community college. With that in mind, we have some amazing community collaborators such as the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, the Cahoon Museum and the Cape Cod Museum Trail, which will all be hosting auxiliary events/workshops and cross-promoting our festival.

All of our extended community events will also be on our schedule, which will be posted on our (soon to be live) website. So also keep your eyes out for that!

I also want to give a shout out to Sophia Capobianco who designed the Waves of Change logo — she is a 4Cs graphic design major and she did an outstanding job. She will also be designing all our marketing materials.

Miller: We wanted to shine a light on social and economic justice, while celebrating the arts. The arts, at their best, can do much more than entertain; they can enlighten and inspire. We wanted to provide examples of this while creating rewarding communal experiences.
