Tutoring Services: Path to Academic Success

By Jeff Schlueter

Cape Cod Community College offers a variety of free tutoring services designed to help students excel academically. Whether drafting papers, studying specific subjects, or navigating college technology, the Tutoring Center is a valuable resource for all students, according to Lisa O’Halloran, academic coordinator for support services.

Located in the Wilkens Library, the Tutoring Center provides one-on-one sessions in person or via Zoom. Appointments can be scheduled up to three weeks in advance through the My4Cs Navigate360 tab. Tutors assist students in mastering course material, improving study habits, and developing stronger academic skills.

O’Halloran emphasized the importance of consistency, noting that students who seek tutoring early and maintain their sessions often earn higher grades. “We genuinely want you to succeed,” she said.

Also within Wilkens Library, the Reading and Writing Resource Center operates as a drop-in service. Staff assist students with finding reference materials and connecting them with the reference librarian. Students can then schedule subject-specific tutoring sessions and return to writing tutors for brainstorming, writing, and citation assistance.

For STEM support, students can visit the Science Study Room and Math Learning Center in the Science and Engineering Center. These drop-in services provide access to skeleton and eye models for biology students, as well as expert help with equations, graphs, and problem-solving.

A newer addition to Wilkens Library is the Tech Peer Mentors team, which assists students with Moodle and other online tools. The team also provides guidance on using BrainFuse, a 24/7 online tutoring platform.

O’Halloran highlighted three key reasons to use the Tutoring Center:

1. It’s free: All services, including BrainFuse, are available at no cost to students.

2. It’s flexible: Options include drop-in centers, scheduled sessions, and online resources.

3. It’s personal: Tutors, many of whom are retired educators or recommended students, are committed to helping students succeed.

Whether tackling challenging coursework, refining writing skills, or learning to navigate Moodle, Cape Cod Community College’s tutoring services offer a comprehensive support system. Students are encouraged to take advantage of these resources early, rather than waiting until midterms.
