The cost of higher education is a significant factor for many adults considering whether to continue their education. At public four-year universities in 2023, in-state tuition averaged $10,662 annually, while out-of-state students paid $23,630, according to U.S. News & World Report. For private institutions, that number soared to over $40,000 per year, and these figures didn’t include expenses like textbooks, housing, and food.

For those deterred by these costs, community colleges are often a more affordable option. In 2024, the Massachusetts Dept. of Higher Education quoted the average tuition for MA community colleges at $7,001. Despite being a more palatable number, there are still additional expenses that come with attending community college that keep it out of reach for some. To make higher education more accessible, the Massachusetts Association of Community Colleges (MACC) has introduced two programs: MassEducate and MassReconnect. These programs cover the cost of tuition and fees, allowing students to attend community college for free. MassEducate is available to students of all ages who meet specific residency requirements, hold a high school diploma or equivalent, and have not earned a bachelor’s degree. MassReconnectfollows similar guidelines but is only available to those 25 or older. 4Cs introduced MassReconnect in 2023-24, followed by MassEducate in 2024-25, making both programs available to all eligible students.

“MassEducate has had a significant impact in both Admissions and Financial Aid applications, (and the) number of students registered for classes and working towards a degree or certificate,” says 4Cs Registrar Luci Holmes. “Both programs give students an amazing opportunity to either begin their educational journey or continue their journey and complete a goal they may have set for themselves years ago.”

Those interested in applying can start by completing the free application for federal student Aid (FAFSA) form. If you are not eligible for that, instead complete the Massachusetts Application for State Financial Aid (MASFA). Once finished, apply to your desired program at 4Cs and follow the instructions to apply financial aid to your bill. For more information, visit the 4Cs website at www.capecod.edu/free
