Letter From the Editor

Our new editor-in-chief, Jess! (Jessica Lynch)

By Jessica Lynch

I hope everyone is having a great start to the spring semester. I was particularly excited to return back to school after winter break so I could step into the editor-in-chief position of The MainSheet.

I have officially been writing for The MainSheet for one year as of this semester. I have thoroughly loved writing every story that I’ve produced. For me, writing isn’t just a hobby, it’s my passion.

I have always loved to write. As someone who has struggled with anxiety for the majority of my life, and still does from time to time, I have always viewed writing as a soft place to land. When spoken words fail me, writing allows me to express myself or advocate for my needs.

I returned to college after being out of a school setting for 10 years. I dropped out of high school in my junior year due to a newly diagnosed anxiety disorder and a severe lack of awareness among school faculty, making it nearly impossible for me to succeed. When I received the opportunity to return to college to work toward a degree, I knew that I wanted to pursue my education further to develop my writing skills for a career in journalism.

Through writing, we have the power to tell the stories of those who cannot, raise awareness to pertinent issues that can help those around us, or entertain ourselves and others. This is what motivates me to write for The MainSheet.

Looking ahead to the spring semester, we have some great things in store for The MainSheet and a team of fantastic writers and editors.

On our writing team, Ray Bishop and Noah Schmidt are returning this semester as senior reporters. They will write alongside 12 new journalism students.

Our managing editor this semester is Jordyn Pimental. If you’re a longtime reader of The MainSheet, you’ll likely recognize Jordyn from her amazing bird and wildlife columns. She has been writing for the MainSheet for just about a year now and is enthusiastic about editing this semester.

Isabella Soque (Izzy) will continue to serve as digital editor this semester. Izzy has done an incredible job of managing our MainSheet social media page on Instagram, which she will also continue this semester. Last semester, she hosted MainSheet’s very first podcast, “SheetTalk,” with her friends, previous MainSheet reporters Amber Roberts and Nate Skinner. While the trio

won’t be returning to the podcast this semester, Izzy will assist in producing the podcast for a new pair of hosts.

Finally, this class could not be where it is without our wonderful professor. Tim Miller has provided us with the skills, education and support necessary to create a dynamic, diverse and interesting school newspaper, and we are so grateful.

As editor-in-chief, I am looking forward to helping our journalism students explore their love for writing through encouraging them to write about what they are most interested in.

This semester will see more book reviews, event coverage, theater and movie reviews, and hopefully touch upon some more serious topics, too. Remember, readers, The MainSheet is your paper. It’s a place for your voice to be heard. I would love to get your feedback about what you’d like to see in The MainSheet.
