The Grossman Commons in preparation for Club Day’s festivities (Grace Sanderson)
By Grace Sanderson
While college students are occupied with classes, homework, jobs, and hobbies, many put aside time to participate in a club. Participating in a club allows students to meet other like-minded people, take a break from their studies, spend time on a hobby or personal interest, learn new skills, network and improve their resumes, and most importantly, have fun! Here at Cape Cod Community College, students and staff are offered dozens of clubs to choose from.
One club that Cape Cod Community College offers to its students is the Creative Writing Club. Prospective members can expect to share their work with other writers, collaborate with
other members, work on new pieces, and even go on field trips. According to Rebecca Griffin, a professor from the Language and Literature Department and advisor for the Creative Writing Club, “creative writers can feel a bit isolated in their craft [so] meeting other creative writers is helpful for getting feedback and finding camaraderie. Plus, it’s fun!”
Another club that Cape Cod Community College offers to its students is the Dungeons and Dragons Club. Club meetings are too short to play a Dungeons and Dragons game session so prospective members can expect to plan future campaign sessions, learn how to run a game as aGame/Dungeon Master, and discuss character creation and their current games. According to Alisha Fabia, an Enrollment Assistant for the Admissions Office and Advisor of the Dungeons and Dragons Club, “there’s a lot of misunderstanding about tabletop roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons… [which] have amazing potential for helping people learn real world skills. [Players] work as a team and problem-solve through various scenarios… [while also learning] to empathize with the characters in the world… For Game Masters… clubs like this provide a great way to get inspiration [or] feedback on… their story and use their imaginations to bring people together. From an academic standpoint, [Dungeons and Dragons] is great for teaching basic math skills! …It’s much more fun to practice math when you’re calculating how much damage a fireball did to a group of enemies.”
