“Alien: Romulus” Disappointing Visuals Detract from Scariness

By Madison Sylvester and Amber Roberts

The new movie “Alien: Romulus” is the seventh release in the “Alien” movie franchise. This movie depicts the journey of six young adults embarking on an expedition to space in hopes of reaching a mothership that promises them cryosleep. However, the journey is filled with obstacles after their vessel crash-lands and they are seemingly left abandoned. After watching the movie in theaters, MainSheet reporters Madison Sylvester & Amber Roberts share their reflections.

What were your thoughts on the visual presentation in the movie?

Madison: I think the visuals could’ve been better considering the $80 million budget. What are your thoughts?

Amber: I agree. In the first part of the movie, before they brightened things up, it felt like the whole thing was CGI. Some scenes, like when the alien burst out of a character, could’ve looked more realistic. It’s disappointing since the visuals are so important to making the movie scary.

How scary was the movie in your opinion?

Amber: I found the movie more creepy than scary. What about you?

Madison: I partly agree. Some scenes were unsettling, but there were also a lot of jump scares, which felt “scarier” to me. The concept was cool, but it felt too unrealistic to be truly terrifying.

Can you identify any aspects you felt could be improved?

Madison: I got lost in some parts of the film; a lot of the scenes felt out of place. Did you notice that?

Amber: I totally agree. Some scenes, like when Rain and Andy were trying to escape, seemed more focused on showing the aliens than the actual plot. They should improve that if there’s another film.

What is your overall review of the movie?

Amber: The movie felt too long, with some repetitive scenes. It was more suspenseful and exciting than scary.

Madison: I agree. The pacing dragged in parts, and some scenes could’ve been shorter to keep the momentum. But the Halloween release was perfect for creating the right atmosphere, especially with a group of friends.
