A three-day arts festival, hosted by the Social and Economic Justice Institute (SEJI), will be held on campus for students and the public from Oct. 8 to 10. Event activities include an art showcase featuring poetry, exhibits, music and more; a film festival; an art workshop; and a concert.

The Waves of Change Art Festival opens on Oct. 8 with a reception at Higgins Art Gallery at 3 p.m. to showcase “Echoes in the Tide,” a collection of unique social justice art pieces that incorporate the use of sea debris. Artists include Duke Riley, Peter Hutchinson, Erin Woodbrey, Mark Adams, Nick Nobili, and Jay Critchley. At 3:30 p.m., Laura Ludwig from the Center for Coastal Studies takes the stage to discuss the characteristics of marine debris and how artists can take a role in upcycling or creating artwork with added value.

At 6 p.m. Ben Cosgrove, a traveling composer and pianist, will perform his music that focuses on landscape, place and the environment. Following his performance, a showcase will commence featuring poetry, music and more from students and community members.

The arts festival continues the next day, Oct. 9, with an all-day film festival curated by Tim Miller (MainSheet adviser) and featuring Q-and-A discussions with filmmakers. The “Fighting the Good Fight Film Festival” begins with a young filmmaker showcase in the Tilden Arts Center from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. From 2 to 4 p.m., “Viva Verdi!” and “Dukakis” will be shown in the lecture hall of the science building. Then, in the Tilden Arts Center, “Keytar Bear” and “Comparsa” will be screened from 4 to 6 p.m., followed by a filmmakers and fans reception in the lobby, where attendees can meet filmmakers and other film fanatics, from 6 to 7 p.m. Snacks and refreshments will be served. To finish the festival, Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” will be shown from 7 to 9 p.m.

Also on Oct. 9, from 4:15 to 7 p.m. in Studio A of the Tilden Arts Center, a Marine Debris Workshop will be held where participants will create their own art using marine debris.

On the final day, Oct. 10, a marine debris exhibit panel discussion will be held via Zoom from noon to 1 p.m. Then, starting at 7 p.m. in the Tilden Arts Center, the Kotoko Brass band will perform. The band’s music blends West African rhythms with New Orleans jazz style music. Openers for the band include guitarist Keb Hutchings and saxophonist Mike Flanagan.

All events are free except for the concert.
