Looking for a date spot close to campus? Gannon’s Tavern in Hyannis is just eight minutes away and serves hearty comfort food, live sports, and local music.
My boyfriend and I started with clam chowder, which arrived hot and creamy with a balanced touch of salt and clams. As a New England staple, it delivered exactly what we expected and set the tone for the night. For dinner, I ordered a medium-rare burger with fries. The burger was cooked perfectly, and the fries were crisp and salty — just right. My boyfriend had the short rib mac and cheese, which had a generous portion of tender meat with a rich, cheesy sauce. Neither of us left hungry, and both meals were satisfying.
Prices ran slightly high for a student budget, though not unusual for the Cape. My burger cost $17, which is about the going rate at other local restaurants. The short rib mac and cheese was $25, as the short rib was an add-on. With sodas and a tip, our bill was around $70. While it was more than a typical weeknight meal, the quality made it worth the splurge.
While the tavern was packed when we arrived on a Thursday, the host seated us immediately at a high-top near the bar. Service was also excellent: Our sodas were refilled before we even noticed they were low. Our entrées took about 20 minutes, which felt reasonable given the crowd and a large party dining nearby.
Where Gannon’s fell short was the atmosphere. Harsh fluorescent lighting gave the room a classroom feel, and the décor was sparse, leaving the place looking more like a sports bar than a tavern. Students hoping for a cozy, romantic setting may be disappointed. But for a group date or friends looking to catch a game, it’s a lively choice.
One highlight was the live music. Local Cape Cod musician Amalia Ververis performed covers throughout dinner, including Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” which earned her a standing ovation. Gannon’s hosts live music Thursday through Saturday evenings, making it worth planning a date night around.
Overall, Gannon’s Tavern is best for students who value hearty food, fair service, and live entertainment more than ambience. While not the most romantic option, it’s a reliable spot for a casual night out.
