“Caught Stealing” is the kind of movie that makes you forget you need a bathroom break. Director Darren Aronofsky trades his usual bleak drama (“Requiem for a Dream,” “The Whale”) for something more playful, though no less intense, delivering a crime story laced with unpredictable twists.

The film follows Hank (Austin Butler), a man with a troubled past who agrees to watch his neighbor Russ’s (Matt Smith) cat. That small favor pulls him into a violent feud between rival gangs after Russ is revealed to have stolen from them.

Butler anchors the film with a vulnerable performance. Hank isn’t an action hero – he drinks, daydreams, and hides from his pain, but each chase, fight, and loss pushes him closer to a reckoning. Watching him stumble, hesitate, and finally confront the truth makes the story more compelling than a typical action thriller.

While the movie is marketed as a crime-comedy, the laughs are few. The intensity of Hank’s unraveling overshadows most of the humor, keeping the tone closer to tragedy than farce.

Still, “Caught Stealing” is wildly unpredictable and best experienced without spoilers. By the time the credits roll, audiences will likely echo the same reaction: “Wow, what did I just watch?”
